Can you remove a negative Google review? What actually works

Updated 2 October 2026 · By the Dazenga team

Short answer

Only reviews that break Google's content policies can be removed, so you can report a review and Google decides, but a review that is merely negative or unfair usually stays. Reply politely, and use the report option only if the review genuinely breaks the rules.

A review you think is unfair is frustrating, and the internet is full of people promising to delete it for a fee. The reality is simpler: Google removes reviews that break its policies, and almost nothing else. Here is the process.

When a review can be removed

Only reviews that violate Google's content policies are eligible. Google's own guidance is clear that you should not report a review simply because you disagree with it or dislike it. Examples of what can qualify include spam, profanity, content from someone with a conflict of interest, and reviews that are not based on a real experience.

A harsh but genuine review of your service is not removable, even if you think it is wrong.

How to report a review

  1. Sign in to your Google Business Profile.
  2. Open the reviews for your business and find the one in question.
  3. Select the report option next to the review and choose the reason that fits.
  4. Submit it and wait. Google says evaluations typically take several days.

If you have a lot to report at once, Google offers a tool for reporting multiple reviews. Check its Business Profile help for the current steps.

If Google says there is no violation

You may see a status such as 'Report reviewed, no policy violation'. In that case Google offers a one-time appeal: you can select up to 10 eligible reviews and submit an appeal form, and you get the final decision by email. If that fails, the review stays.

What not to do

  • Do not offer the customer anything to delete or change it. Offering incentives to remove a negative review is prohibited. See incentives for Google reviews.
  • Do not pay a service that promises to remove reviews. Be very sceptical of any company that guarantees it.
  • Do not post fake positive reviews to bury it. That makes things worse.
  • Do not reply angrily. Your reply is public.

What does work

  • A calm, specific public reply. See how to respond to negative Google reviews.
  • More genuine reviews. One bad review matters much less among a steady stream of recent good ones. See how to ask for Google reviews.
  • Hearing about problems earlier, so fewer customers end up leaving public complaints in the first place.
  • For false statements of fact, speak to a solicitor about your options. Court orders are a separate legal route and not something you can do through the report button.

Frequently asked questions

Are Google reviews permanent?

No. A review stays until the person who wrote it removes it, or Google removes it for breaking its policies. Reviewers can also edit their own reviews.

Can I ask the customer to delete their review?

You can resolve their issue and they may choose to update their review, but you must not offer anything in return for it. That is against Google's policy.

How long does review removal take?

Google says evaluating a report typically takes several days, and appeals can take longer.
